Joan Finton was born in Buffalo, NY and educated at Vassar College and Syracuse University where she received an MFA in Painting. She taught art for many years in NYC high schools, and for 3 years was an administrator for a federally-funded alternative school for high-risk adolescents. After moving to The Bay Area she continued, and continues, teaching in facilities for adults with disabilities, and in her home-studio. As a printmaker she is a member of The Blue Bay Press, a small collaborative, and is a member, and former board member, of The Ca. Society of Printmakers. Inspiration comes at different times from nature, from the world of jazz, and from ruminations on form and color. Her prints are in the collections of The Library of Congress, The Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, as well as numerous private collections.
